SUNYA WHITELIGHT
INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTIST or INSTALLATION ARTIST
Sunya Whitelight is a sculptor and installation artist whose work in wood, metal, silk, & light fosters interdisciplinary creativity at the always-shifting crossroads of connection & environment. Connection is her passion: that elusive & powerful collaboration between the internal (presence) and the external (experience) that generates feelings and ideas unexpected until the instant they spark. This magic happens when a dancer starts as a shadow within a silk & iron chrysalis & emerges with wings & radiance, or when geometric layers of wood & aluminum shape & reflect the light in the fire spinners’ movements. Sunya embodies fluidity in the ever-emerging exploration of materials and invention of techniques needed to fulfil her vision. She is also a mother, & early childhood educator, maintaining a special interest in art therapy & the sharing of culture & history through art, music, storytelling, & dance. She has an academic background in art & education, & has been an artist in service of the Crocker Art Museum over several years in different capacities. Sunya is a resident artist at M0xy Oakland & currently has work on display in Shenyang, China. |
