An established figure in the Sacramento dance scene & founding member of Capital Dance Project, Mr. Calka from Upstate NY has shared his artistic talents with the city for over ten years. Although he grew up as a Ukrainian dancer & gymnast, it wasn’t until his teenage years that he began his formal ballet training at the Albany Dance Institute. Stefan completed his dance education at Indiana University while also taking courses in philosophy. During his time with the Sacramento Ballet he has been featured in various leading roles - most notably as Prince Seigfried in Marius Petipa’s Swan Lake, Jay Gatsby in Ron Cunningham’s The Great Gatsby & Romeo in Ron Cunnginham’s Romeo & Juliet. He has also had the great pleasure of performing the works of celebrated choreographers George Balanchine, Ma Cong, Twyla Tharp, Edwaard Liang, Sebtime Webre & Amy Seiwert. As a distinguished choreographer Stefan has contributed 4 new works to the Sacramento Ballet repertoire & has annually participated in the company’s ‘Beer & Ballet” program since 2004. Last season Stefan collaborated with local artist Shaun Burner to create ˈskēməs for CDP’s ‘Behind The Barre’ show. Mr. Calka has been given the title of ‘resident choreographer’ for Roma Pryma-Bohachevsky Ukrainian Dance in NY, where he works each Summer. After rehearsals, he relaxes & imbibes at favorite pubs: New Helvetia, LowBrau & Der Biergarten.
